1. These are minimum figures. Some sources claim that the correct numbers were 80,000 and 20,000 respectively.

2. On 11 February a Japanese aeroplane dropped a message addressed personally to Lieutenant General Percival. It warned him that any further resistance ‘merely increases the danger to the million civilian inhabitants’ – of Singapore – ‘without good reason, exposing them to infliction of pain by fire and sword.’

3. The figure ‘2’ included in the title of these and other battalions signified that this was the second time that the battalion in question had been formed as a unit in the Australian army.
